The state of Maryland is renowned for being the birthplace of the United States’ national anthem, contributing to its diverse cultural legacy. However, Maryland also harbors a darker aspect, being the residence of some of America’s most notorious serial killers. In this piece, we will explore seven of the most infamous serial killers hailing from Maryland.
Joe Metheny
Joseph Roy Metheny is a notorious serial killer and rapist hailing from Baltimore, Maryland. He has claimed to have taken the lives of 13 individuals. However, only concrete evidence linked him to two murders for which he was convicted. Subsequent investigations validated his involvement in three additional killings, despite him not facing charges for those acts.
Joe Metheny’s tragic life began with a tumultuous upbringing marred by neglect and parental challenges. Raised in Maryland, his parents struggled with their demons – his mother worked tirelessly, while his father succumbed to alcoholism and died when Metheny was just six. Depression gripped him, a burden compounded by spells in temporary homes.
However, Metheny’s mother contradicted his claims, asserting they provided a normal life. Joining the US Army in 1973, Metheny’s life spiraled into drug addiction and homelessness. He eventually turned to murder.
Metheny’s victims were mostly young white s*x workers addicted to drugs. He kidnapped, assaulted, and killed them, often engaging in s*xual violence. Despite his shocking statements of enjoyment and a “rush” from his acts, Metheny’s death sentence was overturned in 2000, and he received life sentences for his heinous crimes. Eventually, he was found dead in his prison cell at the age of 62 in 2017.
Alexander Wayne Watson
Alexander Wayne Watson, Jr. is a convicted American serial killer responsible for four murders. Initially apprehended for the 1994 murder of a woman in Forestville, Maryland, Watson’s DNA was eventually linked to three more killings in Anne Arundel County that had occurred years prior. He pleaded guilty to the killings and was sentenced to four additional life imprisonments.
Watson’s killing spree began with the murder of Boontem Anderson on October 8, 1986. While on sick leave from Fort Meade, Anderson was found s*xually assaulted, stabbed, and strangled in her Gambrill home. Living nearby, Watson, a minor at the time, knew the family. Two years later, Mary Elaine Shereika fell victim. Watson was acquainted with Shereika, r*ped, stabbed, and strangled her in a field after spotting her during a drug session.
In 1993, Lisa Kathleen Haenel, a high school student, was killed. Unlike prior cases, Watson didn’t s*xually assault Haenel but left DNA on a discarded cigarette. Watson’s final murder occurred in 1994 when he killed Debra Cobb during a workplace robbery. Watson’s pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life imprisonment in December 1994. It wasn’t until years later that the extent of his crimes became clear.
Melvin David Rees
Melvin David Rees dubbed the “S*x Beast,” was an American serial killer who terrorized the regions of Virginia and Maryland from 1957 to 1959, committing a total of five gruesome murders.
Rees brutally assaulted and killed Margaret Harold, the girlfriend of an unidentified soldier, during a horrifying encounter on a highway near Annapolis. Two years later, he claimed the lives of all four members of the Jackson family near Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Son of a police lieutenant, Rees used his sinister connections to access information about his potential victims. His modus operandi involved stalking women until they parked in vulnerable areas outside stores or restaurants. Leveraging his father’s contacts, he obtained their license plate numbers and, using their names lured them into his trap. After abducting his victims, he subjected them to unspeakable acts of violence before strangling them.
Beyond his known crimes, Rees confessed to two additional murders, and authorities suspected his involvement in two more. Before his killing spree, he led a double life as a jazz musician in the Washington, D.C. area. He died while serving his sentence at North Branch Correctional Institution in Maryland aged 67 on October 26, 1995.

Operating between 1999 and 2005, he ruthlessly claimed the lives of five elderly individuals and inflicted harm upon numerous others. In a strategic move to evade the death penalty, Hopewell struck a plea deal with prosecutors. This deal led him to plead guilty to five counts of murder, ultimately resulting in his sentencing to four consecutive life terms.
Growing up near Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park, he initially seemed like a regular kid, but he dropped out of high school in his sophomore year, spiraling into heroin addiction and criminal activities. His rap sheet was marked with convictions for drug-related offenses, burglary, battery, theft, and resisting arrest.
His deadly spree began in 1999 with the murder of 60-year-old Constance Wills. Over the years, he committed a series of violent crimes, leaving a trail of destruction. His victims included Karissa and Karen Lofton, Delores and Ebony Dewitt, Sadie Mack, and Carlton Crawford, among others. Hopewell’s arrest in 2004 revealed his role in these heinous acts.

Charles William Davis targeted numerous women, resulting in the deaths of at least three victims. Juggling his role as a part-time ambulance driver, Davis methodically stalked his prey, lurking until they parked in vulnerable spots near stores or eateries.
Leveraging his father’s connections, Davis covertly obtained the victims’ license plate numbers. Armed with their names, he cunningly paged them, falsely claiming their car’s lights were left on. When the unsuspecting women ventured out to inspect, Davis abducted, r*ped, and strangled them.
With a twisted desire for public attention and the intention to confound investigators, Charles William Davis discarded the victims’ bodies openly along roadways within his ambulance’s jurisdiction. In a morbid twist, when emergency calls came in to assist these unfortunate women, no one could fathom that the man arriving too late was none other than the very man responsible for their deaths.

Initially considered a suspect in a gun store robbery in Maryland, the investigation soon unearthed a trail of chilling homicides. Hailing from Prince George’s County, Maryland, Jason’s upbringing defied the typical profile of a serial killer, raised in a close-knit and loving family.
Transitioning from petty theft, Jason escalated to armed home invasions, driven by a hunger for power. His criminal path converged with violent ends, beginning with the murder of Vilma Butler during a home invasion in 2008. Months later, Karissa and Karen Lofton fell victim to his brutal attack. Muhammad, initially named John Allen Williams, embraced the Nation of Islam and changed his surname. The killings were depicted by Malvo in drawings as part of a “jihad.”
Muhammad was a former soldier turned auto mechanic. He bore a deep grudge against his ex-wife and society. During the trial, Malvo disclosed that the shootings aimed to divert attention from Muhammad’s plan to abduct his children. The objective was to extort law enforcement for money to cease the attacks. Muhammad’s trial, for one of the murders, resulted in a capital murder conviction and a death sentence. He was also convicted in Maryland.
The case against Muhammad and Malvo unraveled after a call to the police connected them to a robbery-murder in Alabama. A fingerprint on a weapon’s magazine led investigators to Malvo. Their apprehension ultimately ended their reign of terror.
